Stack magazine awards 2016: the winners

Cover of the year: Parterre de Rois, issue 04, ‘Happiness’

Subscription service Stack was set up in 2008. Each month, it delivers a new issue of a mystery independent magazine to readers – from analogue fashion title Pylot to food magazine The Gourmand.

Last year, the company founded an awards scheme for independent publishers, with categories awarding great writing, photography, illustration, cover design and art direction.

This year’s winners were selected by judges Gail Bichler, design director at the New York Times magazine, Debbie Millman, president of AIGA and Jeremy Leslie, creative director at MagCulture.

Magazine of the year went to MacGuffin, the Amsterdam zine founded by design historian Kirsten Algera and architecture historian Ernst van der Hoeven. The magazine showcases fascinating stories behind everyday items: issue one was all about beds, while issue three focuses on rope and knots.

The Real Review, a magazine about architecture and spatial design, was named Launch of the year

Jack Self’s architecture and spatial design magazine Real Review was named Launch of the Year at the Stack Awards. The magazine was designed by OK-RM and includes articles on public spaces, housing and environmental issues.

The Happy Reader’s Seb Emina was named Editor of the Year. A collaboration between Penguin Classics and Fantastic Man, the magazine is divided into two halves. Each issue contains a long-form interview with a notable book fan (recent interviewees include Kristin Scott Thomas and Alan Cumming) followed by a new look at a Penguin Classics title.

Experimental Amsterdam magazine Voortuin picked up the Art Director of the Year award. The magazine was founded by Nanda Meijer, Sim Kaart and Tom S. Janssen. Each issue takes a different format: one included a CD-ROM, screen prints and digital content while another was packaged as a medical file, revealing the story of a 28-year-old woman named Melinda.
