The vibrant artwork for the debut album by Haitian-Canadian DJ and producer Kaytranada (AKA Louis Kevin Celestin) was created by Spanish illustrator Ricardo Cavolo. Cavolo was asked to create a portrait of Kaytranada and incorporate a series of symbols, including aeroplanes, a broken heart and a storm.

“I think he was leaving a darker time in his life [Celestin revealed in an interview with The Fader that he was struggling with depression while making the album], so he wanted to show that darkness within the art,” explains Cavolo. “He mentioned a few details, to help me understand that dark atmosphere, and I tried to translate that onto the portrait.”

Like much of Cavolo’s work, the illustrations draw on folk art and religious imagery. “That’s my language. I love to work on that mix of tribal art and early medieval art,” he says. Symbols were hand drawn: “I need that, I need to feel the paper, the brush, the texture,” adds Cavolo.
