D&AD New Blood: Graphic Design, Branding, Typography and Illustration

D&AD’s New Blood Awards celebrate the best in student creativity. Each year, students from around the world respond to briefs set by a cross-section of brands, charities and other organisations.

This year’s winners will be announced on July 7 but ahead of the ceremony, we have picked out some of our favourites. Previous posts looked at a series of themes that have come out of the work submitted, but in this one we are looking at the design disciplines.

Graphic Design/Branding

Let’s Be Frank for the Design Bridge brief

Creative: Thais Jacoponi de Moura
University: Miami Ad School Madrid
Tutor: Ana Martin

Frank is a beauty brand that celebrates our peculiarities. It features products for the face, chest, stomach and, er, nether regions. Each product range is packaged using illustrations that correspond to that part of the body. Stack them up to create some unlikely figures.

Streetlines for Ford

Creative: Jamie Quantrill
University: Falmouth University
Tutor: Jon Unwin

Streetlines is a campaign that encourages London commuters to consider walking as a viable transport option. For two months, the iconic tube lines are physically displayed on the streets of London, acting as a visual guide to aid mobility as well as a physical reminder of the attainable walking distances between tube stations. Streetlines also guide lost tourists to their nearest tube station, improving movement in congested areas. Stories of new discoveries made on journeys using Streetlines are captured and displayed, encouraging commuters to complete a healthier, more sustainable and more enjoyable journey above ground.

Protecting Pubs Campaign for Monotype

Creative: Neil Bennison
University: University of Central Lancashire
Tutor: Andy Bainbridge

Pubs play a pivotal role in local communities, but are increasingly under threat of demolition or being converted to another use by large developers. The protecting pubs campaign encourages people to take the first step in saving their beloved locals, by nominating them as an asset of community value.
