The overall Site of the Year award, a gong picked by industry experts, was handed to Because Recollection, a website created by 84.Paris to celebrate ten years of record label Because Music. The site offers a fun and spontaneous journey through music released by the label, including acts such as Justice, Klaxons and Laurent Garnier. Visitors to the site are taken at random to different pages on the site simply by clicking the space bar, and then each artist’s page has charming but straightforward interactive artworks to play with.
The judges praised the website for its sense of humour and its addictive qualities, which kept them playing with it even if they weren’t familiar with the record label itself beforehand. This is surely a demonstration of how web design at its best has the ability to surprise and delight but without demanding a lot of effort or time (from the outset at least) from the user. The website that won the People’s Choice Award this year was Vincent Morisset’s Way To Go (which was created by Morisset and AATOAA, and backed by the National Film Board of Canada). Again, simplicity and charm lies at the core of this site, which allows users to take a trippy digital walk through the woods, admiring plants and trees along the way, and diving into rivers.
Way To Go mixes live action footage with animation and clever interaction design to create an online artwork which is easy to play with and totally absorbing.
