Ads of the Week

With Valentine’s Day looming, we have a loved-up round up of new ads for your pleasure this week. But before we get to the slushy stuff, here’s a brilliant new spot for Honda out of Australia…

The ad’s central character falls asleep and dreams an adventure in the new Honda HR-V car, but as is the way with dreams, everything gets a wee bit bizarre… Funny stuff. And now for the romance. This spot for Google Android isn’t technically a Valentine’s ad, though with its pairing of cute animal friends, it might as well be. The ad’s message is a bit vague but as Google no doubt knows all too well, put a selection of sweet animals in a film and you’ll get the clicks. Agency: Droga5 New York.

Of the many brands trying to co-opt a bit of publicity on the back of the release of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, B&Q was by far the most successful. An all-staff memo from the DIY firm’s head office was ‘leaked’ to the press earlier this week, warning staff that they should “anticipate the need for extra stock” of items including ropes and duct tape after the bondage-heavy film comes out. After receiving widespread coverage in the UK media, the brand admitted the memo was a PR stunt. Nicely done.

Sticking with DIY, this new ad for French store Leroy Merlin suggests that the couple that renovates together, stays together. This Danish ad for Interflora is a sweet tale of love across teenage social tribes, with a Grease-style twist. Agency: Brandhouse; Director: Martin Werner; Production company: Bacon.

Gap continues the slightly eccentric ad positioning that it has adopted of late in this new ad, which sees a pair of jeans spark a spring romance. It is the first of twelve episodes in the campaign that will play out on Instagram and YouTube. The love segment of the round-up is now at an end, and instead we wrap up with this entertaining short documentary about the filmmaker Matthew Frost. Directed by Paul Johnston and Adam Beck, the film turns Frost’s satirical approach (he’s behind a series of short films that send up aspects of our modern culture, including selfies and fashion films) back on the director, with amusing effect. The film forms part of a series of titled ‘New Breed: Content with Content’, made by The Creator Class. Agency: Free.
