Tasty George Clinton box set for Record Store day

Ready for Record Store Day, a delicious new box set featuring unique marbled vinyl discs, a DVD and two CDs celebrates George Clinton’s 2014 performances at Metropolis Studios in London. We talked to its designer, Jon Daniel

The box set is named Chocolate City: P-Funk Live at Metropolis in honour of Parliament’s seminal 1975 album of the same name (itself a reference to the ethnic make-up of Washington DC, a city in which Parliament had a particularly large following). Daniel is a self-confessed ‘massive’ Clinton fan and engineered an opportunity to work with the great man thanks in part to a connection with Loïs Acton who manages all of Clinton’s projects and by placing some of his artworks in the studios at the time of Clinton’s Weekender performances there. The upshot was that Daniel got to work on a release marking both the weekender performances (which included a live-to-vinyl session) and the Guardian Masterclass which Clinton gave as part of the visit.

The box set (which was produced by Modo) includes a DVD of the masterclass as well as two CDs of the live performances. The performances also feature on two heavyweight 180g vinyl discs, one representing white chocolate and the other milk, cut the day after the live show. The ‘splatter’ patterns on both discs (which were produced by Breed Media) are unique.

The set, which is limited to 1500 copies, will be available to order in shops to mark Record Store Day on April 18.

Special foldout poster / sleeve notes featuring George Clinton in his ‘Uncle Jam’ guise (an American MP’s uniform) and next to the “Houses of Parliament-Funkadelic”.

Daniel also produced badges and rosettes which pick up on some of the political themes of the original Parliament album. They were given out during a recent visit by Clinton to Westminster
