The Kioskafé opened last weekend. Modelled on European city kiosks, it sells travel essentials, Allpress coffee and over 300 newspapers and magazines.
The shop stocks a range of art, design, culture, fashion and food titles – from Neon to Dazed, Intelligent Life, Riposte and the Gourmand (and CR) – as well as national papers from around the world. Customers can also choose from a print-on-demand catalogue, which includes The Zimbabwe Independent and Albania’s Gazeta Paloma. Titles can be ordered in advance, or customers can wait while they are printed.
Tyler Brûlé, Monocle‘s editor in chief, describes the space as “a celebration of print – putting the written word, fine images and crisp paper centre stage.”
“We’ve worked hard to make the selection of titles on the shelves a mix of the much-loved and commercial, combined with just-launched indies that get shelf space not because they’re new and hyped but because they offer journalistic value,” he adds.
The space was designed by Monocle’s creative team: the Kioskafé logo features a face constructed from brackets and colons while tote bags, postcards and notebooks feature phrases in speech bubbles, providing a playful take on language and the written word.
Furnishings and decor are neutral, with wooden floors, black-and-white striped awning and a wooden coffee bar designed by EDM architects.
Alongside printed products, the shop stocks a range of items aimed at travellers, including toothbrushes, shower gel, shampoo, pens and underwear. There’s also a selection of Kioskafé-branded products, including pencil cases, travel organisers and umbrellas. If the venture proves successful, Monocle says it will be looking to expand the franchise internationally.
With the number of independent newsagents in decline and most stations dominated by the same handful of big chains, it’s great to see a new space devoted to promoting print journalism.
The Kioskafé looks friendly and inviting, and the carefully curated stock offers a vast selection of high quality titles – including those who would struggle to secure newsstand deals in larger stores.
Kioskafé is open every day from 7am-7pm at 31 Norfolk Place, W2 1QH. For details, see kioskafe.com
