Keeping the Anzac memory alive

The Unforgotten Soldiers is a tableau vivant installation, performed in black and white, which is touring New Zealand as a tribute to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) soldiers who fought in the Gallipoli campaign during the first world war 100 years ago...

Sky TV New Zealand and the History channel collaborated with DDB New Zealand, production company Will O'Rourke and director Pete Baker at The Glue Society on the project, which opened on Lorne Street in Auckland on April 17.

Further installations are scheduled for Wellington's Civic Square tomorrow (21) and Christchurch's Cashel Mall on April 22. Passersby using the #unforgottensoldiers hashtag have been uploading images of the first event on Twitter.

Soldiers from Australia and New Zealand landed at Gallipoli Cove in the Ottoman Empire on April 25 1915 as part of the Allies' campaign to capture the peninsula.

Anzac Day on April 25 has since become a national day of remembrance in both countries, commemorating all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. It is also observed in the Cook Islands, Niue, Pitcairn Islands and Tonga.

According to DDB, on April 25 a TV spot will launch on free-to-air and SKY channels showing footage from the live performances.

"This memorial is designed to bring as much relevance to this special occasion as possible and help Kiwis remember those who've given everything for their country," says DDB New Zeleand's ECD, Shane Bradnick. "What better way to show what our heroes went through than by demonstrating it, live."
