To launch CR Club – our new subscriber initiative – we are holding a free invite-only event: a talk by the world-renowned typographer and letterpress practitioner, Alan Kitching, which will take place at The Royal College of Art in London coinciding with their GraphicsRCA: Fifty Years exhibition...

Letterpress @ The RCA will take place on the evening of November 11. Following Kitching's lecture, there will also be a tour of the college's newly opened GraphicsRCA: Fifty Years exhibition by Adrian Shaughnessy, one of the show's curators.

Kitching began an apprenticeship in compositing in 1956 and, with Anthony Froushaug, co-established the experimental printing workshop at Watford College of Technology, School of Art in 1964. He introduced letterpress printing to the Omnific studio in 1985 (in which he partnered with Derek Birdsall) and established his famous Typography Workshop in Clerkenwell in the late 1980s. He went on to teach letterpress at the Royal College of Art from 1991 to 2006 and was integral in helping to save the department from closure (it was rehoused in a brand new wing of the college in 1992).

On his Graphic Journey blog, designer Mike Dempsey writes "There is one special man who has printer's ink coursing through his veins and has elevated letterpress composition to an art form. He has been doing it for over four decades. He is Alan Kitching...".

The schedule for the CR Club evening (6pm-8.30pm, November 11) is as follows:

6.00pm - guests arrive
6.15pm - guests to be seated
