Six New Ads To Watch

Up this week are new spots for Philips, Ryvita, Vorwerk, The Syria Campaign, and a new 'lyric speaker' which looks set to make home karaoke even more fun. First up though, is this sweet new spot for Thomson holidays, set to a soundtrack of Bohemian Rhapsody by William Shatner...

The ad, from Beattie McGuinness Bungay, follows the brand's previous spot Simon The Ogre, which sees a grumpy dad transformed on holiday. This time, it's a little girl's teddy bear that gets to appreciate the sunshine, but really the spot is all about Shatner, whose version of the Queen classic works perfectly here, turning the ad from schmaltz into something far quirkier. It's clearly cute toy week on the CR blog, as our next spot also utilises the charm of inanimate characters as a robot falls in love with a Vorwerk automatic vacuum cleaner. A change of pace now, with this hard-hitting film for The Syria Campaign. The spot is directed by Unit9's Martin Stirling, who also shot last year's hugely successful Syria film for Save The Children.

Martin Stirling has clearly been on a bit of a roll lately, as he also directed this spot for Philips, to promote the brand's Hue lightbulbs. The ad shows how living room design has changed over the decades and points out that it's time our lighting systems changed too. Our next project is technically a piece of product design, but as it's made by creative agency Six in Japan, I thought I'd sneak it in here. The film demonstrates a prototype speaker that can display the lyrics from the music you're listening to. It utilises lots of rather lovely fonts too. We finish with a simple but appealing ad for Ryvita, which uses bright colours and a cheerful soundtrack as a backdrop to stop motion animation showing the various snacks you can make with the crackers. The cheesy voiceover at the end lets it down a bit, but otherwise it's a simple product demo with a dollop of charm. Agency: Creature London; Director: Greg Barth; Production company: Blinkink.
