Martin Parr’s Real Food van at Photo London

Early this year Phaidon published Real Food, a book featuring images of food shot by celebrated British photographer Martin Parr. Parr’s approach to photographing food is an antithesis to the current trends in food photography: he presents food in all its plastic wrapped, artificially coloured glory; a stark contrast to the rustic wooden boards and deliberately strewn micro herbs we’ve come to expect.

Images from the book have been brought to life at Photo London. Parr’s daughter, Ellen – who is a trained chef – and set designer Alice Hodge have curated a gastronomic experience, where you can eat some of the food pictured in the book, including these wonderfully weird lamb shaped biscuits (below), which are a delicious lemon and coconut flavour in case you were wondering.

We asked Ellen Parr what her favourite from the collection is, and she was quick to mention the lemongrass braised mutton ‘báhn mi’ style toastie with Vietnamese slaw, “because it tastes so different from how the photograph looks. I’ve visited Vietnam a few times and I love the flavours.”

The installation will be parked daily at Somerset House’s Victoria Embankment until Sunday. This is the van’s debut appearance, but we were told it is likely to travel around the world.

Martin Parr will speak about his work at Photo London on Friday 20 May 2016. He will be in conversation with William A Ewing, the curator of the Photo London Talks programme. More info is at photolondon.org
